How do you define knowledge management? It can mean so many things to different people depending on your perspective.
At the same time, certain common factors apply and should be referenced in any attempt to define knowledge management.

There is usually an abundance of information about the people and the work accomplished by an organization. A selective process should therefore be involved which discriminates for information which is practical and which can be of use and against information that can be safely disregarded.

For knowledge to be worth managing, it must be in line with the goals and objectives of the company or organization.

People should be the number one concern when managing knowledge. Their combined knowledge and accumulated experience in any given field should be managed in such a way that it can be tapped into by anyone who needs to in that organization.

Technology of course is involved but more in a support role rather than being the focus of knowledge management.

For knowledge management to be practical it also has to motivate. Any information therefore that can excite people, give them a vision, help them rise to higher levels of thinking and performance, should of necessity be included in any knowledge management operation.

Putting all this together, how can we actually define knowledge management?

Below there is a list of definitions. A cursory glance reveals that no one definition seems to encapsulate all factors. It is important to read them all, get an overview, and then note the various ingredients that make up the description knowledge management.

So look over this list and see which elements are practical in your particular application.
