HEADSETS : A GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND
Neil Armstrong’s words when he first walked on the moon – ‘One small step for man…one giant leap for mankind’ – are immortal.
But while most people know a little bit about those early days of space exploration, most people don’t know that it was through a Plantronics headset that those immortal words reached the world. In fact , the race for the first headset in outer space was won by astronaut Wally Shirra who chose to use a modified lightweight Plantronics MS50 inside his helmet for the Mercury mission in 1962.
Plantronics has continued to make huge strides forward in headset technology – with major milestones including the invention of the world’s first call centre headset in 1983 and the Discovery 604 in 2005 which helped Bluetooth wireless headphones go mainstream.
Whilst many people still use corded headsets, it is perhaps the invention of wireless headsets that has had the biggest impact on how office workers function. In the nineties, Plantronics technology was transforming the workplace with their lightweight, in-the-ear headsets which were followed by the introduction of cordless, wireless models which allowed hands-free operation. By the end of the century, Plantronics was perfecting headsets for gaming, internet telephony and multimedia….further cementing their industry leadership.
Whilst headsets may have found fame in outer space, it’s right here on terra firma that wireless headphones are helping ordinary people from all walks of life to put their own stamp on history. And Plantronics has been an industry pioneer in wireless headset phone technology – from convenient, flexible devices worn by a busy parent so they can multitask while coping with the home admin to smart and innovative Bluetooth headsets that enable companies to leverage their IP communications platforms.
And that isn’t a glib statement. Just a few examples of their innovative products …. in 2001, they created the Plantronics M1000 Wireless headset, the first all-new lightweight wireless headset featuring Bluetooth wireless technology; in 2003, it was the world’s first Bluetooth headset that lasted all day; 2006, it was the world’s first VoIP-Optimised Bluetooth headset and in 2008, it was the industry’s first headset to combine water, dust and shock resistance with windscreen technology.
From its headset on the moon to its groundbreaking Bluetooth wireless technology, Plantronics has made it possible for men and women around the world to take giant leaps forward when it comes to communications.
